I cannot think of a better way of opening a church service or other religious celebration than using Martinson’s majestic Lo! He comes with clouds descending. A richly-harmonised stanza for choir alone follows, after which a passage for organ, gradually rising in dynamic, pitch and intensity leads us to the final clamactic verse – a magnificent setting of the hymn melody (ATB and congregation) above which a soprano descant rises with brilliance and power. Part writing is
straightforward and this can make a most exciting addition to the repertoire of choirs of all standards.
